Family Globalization

1 min read

The saying goes as follows: “Home is where the heart is.”

Usually home is where you grew up, your family resides or just where your “roots” are. My family, however, is global.

My parents are retired teachers reaping the benefits of senior citizen discounts and holding down the fort in rainy old Seattle, Washington USA.

My brother, Scott (Age 32), moved to Japan four years ago to be an English teacher and is now engaged to a cute, bubbly Japanese woman that I have yet to meet…(update: I have now met her, planned and followed through with their American wedding, and will soon be an aunt to a baby girl!)

And I, the nomadic baby of the family, ran away to a small island in Greece and have spent the last three years serving flaming bottles of Moet Chandon to annoying Italians.

As I grow older, my need for family grows and grows…my bonds become stronger with my parents, and my brother and I talk more often about the silly cultural differences we encounter in our countries of choice.

To tell the truth, I my family has gone trough some difficult times in the past…some have left our hearts looking for voids to fill, others have brought us together through laughter and pure entertainment.

I have to admit, I wouldn’t give up my global family for anything.
