How to Calculate a Short-Stay in Europe: Schengen Visa Calculator

2 min read

Need to know how many days you have been in Schengen countries? Here’s your Schengen Visa Calculator!

For years I have been giving advice on how to calculate your way through Schengen visas, overstays, understays and a whole bunch of ‘what-ifs’. I decided to put my knowledge to good use, and let my readers calculate their situations for themselves!

The most common Schengen short-stay visa myths for visa calculator

Travelers can stay 90-days within Schengen, leave for a day, and then come back again. This is called a “visa run,” and it is not possible in Schengen countries.

Other travelers believe that the year is separated into two 180-day periods, and as long as they do not overstay their first 180-day period, they can continue on into their next 180-day period with their day-counter back to 0. That might have been true before the EU Council made an amendment in 2013. According to the actual law, a traveler cannot overstay 90 days within any 180-day period. That means it’s a rolling counter that stays with you all the time.

The Schengen Visa Calculator: Why it’s needed

It’s a lot of manual work to think back to when you have entered and do the math! I have created a Schengen Zone Calculator that everyone can use for:

  • Planning your trip in advance
  • Checking your remaining days while traveling throughout Europe
  • Checking how many days you might have overstayed your short-stay visa

To use the calculator, please select it under the menu of this website, or click here.

Hello, greetings from your new club member. 🙂 Specifically, my first entry was September the 9th 2019 and exit September the 27h. The next entry was on 9th February 2020 and as far as I am instructed, I have the right from 9th February to 90 days, either continuously or partially during those 180 days beginning on 9th February and ending on 7th August, if I’m not mistaken. I would leave sengen at the end of March now and come again on 28 June. So I’m asking you, how much am I entitled to stay from June 28, until August, or can I stay longer, for example, until early or mid-September? I was calculating, one calculator says I can, the other I can’t do that until August alone. Thanks in advance.

Hey Ana! Welcome, welcome! Sorry for the delay, as I was on my honeymoon! It seems like you are coming and going more than the average tourist to Schengen countries. Are you sure the tourist visa is the right one for you? With all the coming and going, it is a bit difficult to calculate just by looking at it. But on Feb 9th, you definitely have the ability to stay 90 days straight if you last exit was September, so if you are only staying like weeks at a time, your 90/180 days should last you all summer. So just count the days in your next trips you are in Schegen and make sure they are not over 90/180.
